A Practice Ready for Its Next Stage
Be Part of Restoring the Living Purpose of the Museum
Since 2021, Phenomenal Museum has been held inside museums in the U.S. and across the world, including The MET, LACMA, Petit Palais, Qingzhou Museum, Blanton Museum, and others.
After years of workshop-based activations, it is now ready to take its next form.
Your contribution supports the launch of weekly activations at The Met and lays the groundwork for Phenomenal Museum’s long-term institutional home.
Online giving is being set up. In the meantime, tax-deductible contributions may be made by check

“Phenomenal Museum made a big impact on me and how I approach not only art in museums and galleries but also random objects on the streets of the city, which is essentially one huge living, breathing museum. It gave me a different relationship with what I was looking at, where I was, what was around me, a one-on-one connection with items and elements that I have seen and hustled past dozens, hundreds, or thousands of times without giving them a second thought.” - Mark Rifkin
Phenomenal Museum
is a live, guided experience inside museum galleries that teaches participants how to meet art directly through practices of attention, perception, and imagination.
Through grounding, intuition, and collective sharing, the sessions restore the museum as a place where works of art can be encountered as living presences rather than as distant objects
The Practice and the Book
The Muse and the Mountain
is a practical guide to creativity as a spiritual path. Through reflective and guided meditations drawn from ancient wisdom traditions and Buddhist practices, it revives the original purpose of the mouseion: to sit with the Muse.
The book extends the work of Phenomenal Museum, offering techniques for re-enchanting our relationship to art and transforming the modern museum from a place of distance into a site of inspiration, intimacy, and presence.
What you Make Possible
Your contribution will allow us to:
• Hold regular Phenomenal Museum sessions at The Met, bringing this experience to the public on a regular basis..
• Establish the Phenomenal Museum Foundation: Creating our own nonprofit structure, building initial capacity, and supporting the core team who carries the work.
• Launch The Muse and the Mountain: A book by Jessica Kung that develops the practical phenomenology behind Phenomenal Museum and the ancient practice of sitting with the Muse.
• Seed future museum activations: Additional support will allow us to bring Phenomenal Museum to other museums in the U.S. and beyond.
